INTRODUCTION

Hey there again my fellow adventurers! It's been a while as I was under the blue for some time as I was struggling to find some inspiration on what to cook for you guys to read. Something worth reading and perhaps, inspiring as well for my lovely readers. Recently last June, my partner and I went on an epic road trip adventure again and this time, we explored Indonesia since we can only afford to explore Asian countries at the moment.

In this comprehensive guide this time, I will break down the detailed itinerary for 14 days which covers 4 places as follows:

  1. Lombok

  2. Nusa Penida

  3. Bali

  4. East Java

Our routes will be from Kuala Lumpur - Lombok - Nusa Penida - Bali - East Java - Surabaya - Kuala Lumpur. In this comprehensive article, we will be exploring these 5 places (on a backpacker budget for 2 pax) as follows:

i. Getting there

ii. Accommodations

iii. Activities

iv. Food and Drinks

v. Practical Tips

_______________________________________________________________________________

Destination 1 : Lombok (4 Days)

Our route around Lombok as follows:

Lombok Airport - Sembalun - Kuta - Bangsal

Getting there

Flight

Kuala Lumpur (KLIA2) - Lombok (Lombok International Airport)

Cost : RM295/ pax (Via Superjet Indonesia) = Estimated USD 63/pax

Duration : Approximately 3 hours

Car

Lombok International Airport - Sembalun - Kuta

Cost : 1.1million IDR shared between 2pax = Estimated USD 34/ pax

Note: It is better if you have contact with a local driver to ease your journey around Lombok as traveling via bike can be tiring since places in between Lombok are very far from one another. Grab can be pricey too at times and sometimes non-accessible at some places. We had arranged our transportation before arrival with our driver, Pak Mulyadi which covers the airport, Sembalun, and Kuta.

Pak Mulyadi contact number : 6281907951405

DAY 1

Transfer from Lombok International Airport - Sembalun Pondok Arum Rinjani

Duration : About 2 hours

Location 1 in Lombok : Sembalun

I’ve seen my fair share of beautiful places, but Sembalun in Lombok has a way of stealing your heart in an instant. It’s like stumbling upon a hidden gem, a place where time slows down and nature takes center stage.

Imagine rolling green hills as far as the eye can see, punctuated by traditional Lombok villages with their thatched roofs. The air is clean and fresh, carrying the sweet scent of pine and damp earth. Rice terraces, like giant emerald steps, cascade down the slopes, creating a mesmerizing pattern. Every bend in the road reveals a new postcard-perfect scene.

There’s an undeniable peacefulness here. Away from the bustling crowds, Sembalun offers a chance to unwind and connect with nature truly. The locals are warm and welcoming, their smiles as genuine as the beauty of their surroundings.

Accomodation

Cost : IDR250k/night shared between 2 pax = Estimated USD8/pax

Note: Do compare the prices in a few booking platforms to get the best deals. Sometimes, booking directly from the accommodation itself is much cheaper too. Hence, it would help if you did your due diligence in researching. We got a more affordable price directly from the owner himself.

Pondok Arum Rinjani contact : https://wa.me/c/6281918318776

Talking about a B40 cost but with a T20 view. If you are looking for a place that has a breathtaking view of all three of these spots: Anak Dara Mountain, Rinjani Mountain, and Pergasingan Hill, look no further than Pondok Arum Rinjani. Serving the best sunrise view of the above spots, nestled in a quiet and lush green neighborhood and exceptional hospitality from the owner himself, Pak Sahan. He was extremely accommodating in catering to our needs and also invited us over to a free breakfast with him and his family!

Do take precaution that the temperature will drop to an extremely cold temperature at night hence take the necessary preparations for it. Room amenities are just basic: A thick mattress with a thick blanket, a power socket, and a small table. Toilets will be separated outside and be shared with other tenants. Regardless of the facilities, this place is a value for money because of its location and the breathtaking views that it offers at all 360 degrees.

DAY 2

Activities

Morning - Bukit Selong

Duration : About 10 to 15 minutes hike from the car park to the top

Cost : Entrance -10k IDR/ pax = Estimated USD1/ pax

Bike rent - 50k IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD2/ pax (We rent ours from Arum Rinjani)

It was an easy hike that could be done by anyone even for kids. You can see a mesmerizing sunrise from this spot. However, do come as early as possible to avoid the crowd.

The view of Sembalun town and the rice field from the viewpoint

You can see the entire Sembalun town from Bukit Selong, surrounded by the popular Mount Rinjani, Pergasingan Hill and Anak Dara Hill

Afternoon - Pergasingan Hill

Duration : About 2 hours hike (Better to start hike between 1pm to 2pm so can catch sunset)

Time: Sunrise - 6.24am

 Sunset - 6pm

Price : 50k IDR/ pax = Estimated USD3/ pax  (If you plan to camp overnight at the peak)

25k IDR/ pax = Estimated USD2/ pax (If you are NOT camping overnight at the peak)

Note : The counter authority rent out tents if you need one, but it is better to bring one by yourself in case they are out of stock to be safe.

Pergasingan Hill stands at a magnificent 1750m tall with steep steps at some parts and is suitable for those with at least moderate fitness levels. We did not opt for any guides for this and went by ourselves as it is still doable for us. If you are concerned for your safety or afraid that you will get lost, feel free to opt for a guide.

Pergasingan Hill is more than just a hike; it’s an invitation to an ethereal world of green terraces, misty mountains, and sky-kissing views. Imagine waking up to a sunrise that paints the sky in hues of pink and gold, casting a magical glow over the sprawling rice paddies below.

Here is the breakdown of what you should be expecting while climbing this hill :

Section 1- Very steep incline path with lots of small rocks and some boulders.

Section 2- After an approximately 30-minute hike, you will be passing through an area with thick bushes and trees.

Section 3- Steep path again with big boulders up to the first peak.

There will be two peaks in Pergasingan whereby it will take approximately another 30-minute hike from the first to the second peak. You can camp either at any of those two peaks.

Overnight Camping

  • Experience: Camping on Pergasingan Hill provides an unforgettable opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and witness the celestial wonders of the night sky.

  • Camping Facilities: Basic camping is possible, but facilities are limited. Bring your own camping gear, including tents, sleeping bags, and cooking equipment.

  • Safety: Be prepared for potential weather changes, especially during the rainy season around November to March.

Camping under the starlit sky on Pergasingan Hill is an experience that will stay with you forever. The Milky Way stretches across the inky blackness, a celestial masterpiece that's hard to believe is real. It's a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature. If you are lucky, you can see many cows coming up the hill to graze the grass in the middle of the night. We had a few that stood just beside our small tent when we were sleeping in.

DAY 3

We hiked down from Pergasingan Hill and were picked up by our driver, Pak Mulyadi leaving Sembalun and to our next location Senaru for Sendang Gile Waterfall and Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

Duration : About 1 hour ride from Pondok Arum Rinjani to the location + 1 hour hike to cover both waterfalls

Cost : 20k IDR/pax for both waterfalls = Estimated USD1/ pax

200k IDR / pax with a guide for both waterfalls = Estimated USD13/ pax

Note : Unsure if we had been ripped off but we were told that no one is allowed to enter without a guide for safety reasons as there are a few incidents whereby tourists had been attacked by the savage monkeys there but we are unsure how true it was. We saw some tourists go there without a guide and we were told that if anything happened that would be their own risk.

From the entrance, all the way to the bottom via a flight of stairs to Sendang Gile took about 15 minutes. It was my first encounter, and it was love at first sight. A two-tiered cascade, it crashes into a crystal-clear pool with a force that's both exhilarating and calming. The mist from the falls creates a magical atmosphere, and the surrounding jungle adds to the enchantment. According to locals, if you take a dip under the cascading falls and make a wish, it will be fulfilled.

But the real adventure lay ahead. The trek to Tiu Kelep was a short 30-minute but exhilarating one, leading through a dense rainforest and crossing through 2 rivers. And then, there it was - a breathtaking sight. Tiu Kelep is a single, powerful waterfall that plunges into a deep, emerald pool. The force of the water is incredible, and the surrounding cliffs create a dramatic backdrop. It's a place where you feel truly connected to nature, the sound of the waterfall a hypnotic lullaby.

Location 2 in Lombok : Kuta

Evening - Transfer to Kuta

Duration : Around 3 hours from Senaru

Accommodation

Cost : IDR180k/night shared between 2 pax = Estimated USD6/pax

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the stunning Kuta coast, this charming lodge offers a unique blend of comfort and adventure which is a delightful mix of Balinese and modern design, with cozy cabanas that feel like your own private oasis.

For just a mere USD11 per night, this place offers an ambiance that exceeds one's expectation for such a price in all aspects. At first, we were skeptical to see the pictures in Agoda as we had a bad experience before in Indonesia pertaining to accommodation whereby the pictures posted on those booking platforms were not the same when we went to the accommodation. However, we are happy that this place looks the same as the pictures posted on travel booking platforms.

DAY 4

Activities

Morning - Merese Hill

Cost : Entrance - 10k IDR/2 pax = Estimated USD1/ pax

Bike rent -140k IDR/ 2 pax (we rent ours from Kuta Cabana Lodge to go to Merese Hill) = Estimated USD4/ pax

At the rugged landscape of Merese Hill, on one side, you're greeted by the stunning panorama of Kuta Beach, with its powdery white sand and turquoise waters. On the other, you can see as far as Tanjung Aan, another pristine beach known for its unique horseshoe shape. It’s a view that will leave you speechless.

Pic courtesy @Letzuploadit

Afternoon - Transfer to Bangsal pier Semaya One

Cost :

I. Transport to Bangsal Semaya One via car : 320k IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD10/ pax

ii. Ferry from Semaya One to Nusa Penida which takes approximately 2 hours :

500k IDR / 2pax = Estimated USD16/ 2 pax

iii. Harbour tax : 20k IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD1/ pax

Total : Estimated USD27 /pax

Food and Drinks

Will not touch much on this since it will be based on one's preferences.

Practical Tips

  1. Extremely important : Do get your sim card at the airport as it is extremely difficult to get one outside of the airport since it requires your passport registration to activate the sim card. If you get it from outside, you will be able to activate your sim card. Do survey around the shops in the airport as well to get the best deal according to your needs throughout your stay in Indonesia as some offers hefty prices for the same benefits due to the 'brand'. We got ours for 200k IDR/ pax = Estimated USD13/ pax

  2. Sembalun

-Bring appropriate attires to keep you warm as the temperature in Sembalun tend to drop to an extremely low temperature from evening onwards.

3. Pergasingan Hill

-Bring a hand & feet warmer if possible or thick gloves and socks as the temperature can drop to an insane degree at night, especially in addition to the strong winds.

-Bring enough water and food if you plan to camp overnight since there will be no stalls nearby there to get those.

-Get hiking shoes with a good grip as some slopes are slippery with those small rocks.

4. Sendeng Gile & Tiu Kelep

-Bring a good water shoe if possible for a comfortable trek across the rivers especially.

-You don't need a guide BUT if you are concerned for your safety against those monkeys since there are many of them in the location, you may get one.

-Tiu Kelep waterfall's strong splashes create a cloud of mist that will instantly wet your lens. Hence, bring a lens cloth with you to dry your lens/waterproof casing for your devices.

Destination 2: Nusa Penida (3 Days)

Our routes around Nusa Penida will be as follows:

Bangsal Port - Buyuk Harbour - Sunset Hill Penida Resort - Diamond Beach - Atuh Beach - Suwehan Beach - Devil's Billabong - Kelingking Beach

Getting there

Ferry

Bangsal (Lombok) - Buyuk Harbour (Nusa Penida)

Duration : Approximately 2 hours

Cost :

I. Ferry fee : RM128.73/ 2 pax = Estimated USD15/ pax

ii. Harbour tax : 50k IDR/ 2pax = Estimated USD6/pax

iii.Transport to sunset hill nusa penida : 140k IDR/2pax = Estimated USD5/pax

iv.Bike rent : 80k/day x2 days shared between 2pax = Estimated USD5/pax

v. Fuel : 25k IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD1/pax

Accommodations

Cost : RM269/2 pax for 3 nights = Estimated USD 32/ pax

Nestled amidst lush greenery and overlooking the straits of Nusa Penida at the top of the hill, Sunset Hill Penida Resort is a tropical paradise that offers a perfect blend of relaxation. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the stunning views and the serene ambiance. At this spot, you can see a spectacular sunset show painted in a kaleidoscope of colours in the sky.

The Rooms:

The rooms at Sunset Hill Penida Resort are beautifully designed and equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The beds are incredibly cozy with thick, soft duvet and fluffy pillows. The bathrooms are clean and modern. Not forgetting to mention, the private bathrooms are huge. You will have an open sky above you when you shower. Speaking about being in one with nature! My favorite part was the private balcony that offered breathtaking views of the lush greeneries surrounding it.

All pics are from Booking.com

The rooms and facilities are exactly the same as the ones posted in Booking.com

Activities

DAY 5

Costs :

I. Entrance fee to Diamond beach : 70k IDR/2 pax = Estimated USD2/pax (Note: You get access to Atuh Beach too)

ii. Parking fee at Diamond beach : 5k IDR = Estimated USD0.30

iii. Fuel for bike : 30k IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD1/pax

iv. Parking fee at beach : 5k IDR = Estimated USD0.30

Duration : Approximately 20 minutes walk from the parking entrance to the viewpoint

The name "Diamond Beach" comes from the sparkling reflection of the sun on the water, creating a dazzling diamond-like effect. Using the newly carved limestone stairs, you can reach to the bottom of the beach in approximately 20 minutes.

The best time to visit here is during the dry season between April to October.

  • Crowds: During peak season, Diamond Beach can get crowded, especially on weekends. To avoid the crowds, consider visiting during the week or early in the morning. It is advisable to come during the low tide as the waves here are very rough and can easily become dangerous when the tide is high.

  • Overpriced Vendors: Some vendors near the beach may charge inflated prices for food, drinks, and souvenirs. Be mindful of your budget and compare prices before making a purchase. It is advisable to get food and drinks from somewhere else before coming here. Anyways, you will be given a bottle of water as well which comes together in the entrance ticket price.

Cost: Free

Duration: 15-20 minutes to the bottom via a flight of stairs

Atuh beach is often overlooked by tourists who prefer to visit other 'instagrammable' spots.

Be mindful of the tide  – You need to be careful of tide timings before you go swimming at Atuh beach. Usually before 2 pm is the ideal time if you want to take a dip in these pristine waters. However, the Nusa Penida tides timing change daily so its best to check before you go.

It will take around 15-20 minutes to go down to Atuh Beach if you were to access it from Diamond Beach as there is a concrete pathway bringing you all the way down. However, do be careful and wear proper shoes as the steps can be steep at some parts. This place has one of the softest white powdery sands that you can feel in comparison to other beaches in Nusa Penida.

Cost: Free

Duration: Approximately 30-40 minutes hike to the bottom of the beach via a flight of concrete stairs

This place is quite secluded and is truly underrated too. From the parking lot, you will need to walk pass a temple before you reach the stairs to the beach. You need to walk down a flight of 400 steep stairs which will take around 30-40 minutes. Goodluck coming back up later.

Best time to go there is before noon because the tide is low and you can have a private white beach of your own over there. At high tides, the whole beach will be swallowed by the sea. (Ps: If you are lucky you will be abe to spot a couple of dolphins there.). This spot has a jagged rock similar to the one at Diamond Beach which serves as a beautiful backdrop photo but that can only be accessible during low tide.

DAY 6

Cost : Free

Duration : Approximately 15 minutes from the parking spot to the viewpoint

Will not touch much on Angel Billabong and Broken Beach because those two were a huge disappointment. Don't get me wrong as those two places are no doubt very beautiful BUT the only thing that had ruin the experience was the mass crowds over there. Too many tourists almost the whole day which is a pain sight for us. Hence, I will be sharing more on another similar spot which will guarantee to impress as well.

I bet many of us have heard about Angel Billabong and Broken Beach but how many have actually heard about Devil's Billabong? This is a secluded place which not many knew (except the locals). Almost similar view as the two mentioned but minus the mass crowds. Plus, it is free entrance ! (Ps: According to a local there, you can witness huge waterblow phenomena around 12pm onwards if you are lucky to catch a sight of it)

The view of of Devil Billabong from above the cliff

The pavements to here is quite challenging as there are holes on the road here and there but still manageable as we still able to bring our scooter here. It will be around 15 minutes walk from the parking space to the cliff area where you can witness from above the huge waves crashing through the sides of the cliffs and the infinity pool down there.

Sharing some raw moments that we encountered with the locals and animals around this area

Cost: 5k IDR for parking

Duration: 30 minutes- 1 hour all the way down to the beach and another set all the way up

Imagine a hidden cove nestled between towering cliffs, with a jagged rock formation that resembles a T-Rex. Sounds like something out of a Jurassic Park movie, right? Well, this isn't a movie set, it's the breathtaking Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida, Bali.

Signs clearly state that access to the beach is solely the responsibility of the individual.

While the allure of swimming may be irresistible, be wary of the powerful waves and currents that can carry you out to sea. One of the world most famous beaches, Kelingking Beach also know as T-Rex Bay is one of the deadliest beach in Nusa Penida and no doubt it is , given the number of deaths due to drowning that had happened in the past few years. Many dread going down the steep stairs as no doubt the path to go down is very challenging too as the steps are steep and going up will be another story whereby you have to do some rock climbing for better support. (Note: Please wear proper shoes and avoid flip flps if possible due to some parts of the steps have sharp rocks which you need to pass through)

I think this place was one of the best highlight to do when you are in Nusa Penida. 'Rock-climbing' all the way down and up the terrain sets the adrenaline level right and the view at this beach was something else. Huge waves with the bluest water, clean-soft white sands, towering high cliffs and most note-worthy: LESS CROWD and no trash since less people wants to hike all the way down here.

Kelingking Beach has no doubt, non-edited bluest water that you can see in Nusa Penida. Avoid peak visiting hours between 11am to 3pm as usually tourist will flock the place during that period. If you plan to go down to the beach, advisable to do so around 3pm and if you wish to just enjoy the view from the top , advisable to go around 4pm to 5pm as you need some time to come back up again before it gets dark as it will be extremely dangerous to hike up those steep steps in the dark.

The popular T-Rex view at Kelingking Beach

Huge, strong waves with electric blue water and soft powdery white sands waiting to greet you at the bottom of the cliff

Food and Drinks

Will not touch much on this since it will be based on one's preferences.

Practical Tips

  1. Do check out the tides timing as it varies from time to time. Avoid going to the beaches in Nusa Penida during high tides as the waves there are extremely strong and huge. Can check tides timing here.

  2. Do bring enough water supply as you travel since it can get pretty expensive at touristy areas.

  3. Avoid going to touristy places around 11am to 3pm as that is the peak timings with lots of crowds. Hence, plan ahead and go accordingly if you wish to avoid the crowd.

If you want to experience a 'villa' like stay but still want to be on a budget, you may want to check out Wooden Puri Guesthouse. This place is a bang for your bucks because it ace in all of these aspects: location, cleanliness, comfortability and amenities. It is very near to one of the underrated spots here in Bali which we will cover under the activities part later. They offer scooter rent service too if you need one. The cost will be as follows:

Bike : 80k IDR/ day X 2 days shared between 2 pax = Estimated USD5/pax

Fuel : 60k IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD2/pax

Activities

DAY 8

Cost: Free EXCEPT if you bring your own vehicle, it will be 2K IDR for parking = Estimated USD0.14

The best time to visit the beaches in Bali is from April to October as it is Bali's dry season.

Balangan Beach is a hidden gem that radiates a laid-back charm perfect for travelers seeking an authentic slice of paradise. Known for its pristine white sands, rugged limestone cliffs, and crystal-clear waters, the beach is framed by lush greenery and a backdrop of towering cliffs, offering panoramic views that make it one of the island’s most scenic locations especially for wedding shots. This beach is also endowed by enormous wave that is demanded by all surfers in particular for experience up to professional surfers.

These unique lush greenery spots are only visible during the low tide. Captured during sunset.

View from the top of the cliff (Balangan Viewpoint). You can come here to have an amazing view of the sunset.

Cost: Entrance fee at 30K IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD1/ pax

Operation time: 6am to 6pm

Imagine stepping onto an azure blue sea with soft, white powdery beach and not forgetting a road carved through two huge limestone cliffs at the sides, Pantai Batu Barak's view is truly one of a kind which needs to be ticked off when one is in Bali. Since this place is gaining popularity at a fast rate, to avoid those crowds, consider visiting this place during the weekdays in the day.

DAY 9

Morning

Cost: Parking for bike is 5K IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD0.20/ pax

Parking for car is 10K IDR

Duration: 30 - 40 minutes hike down

Waves at this part of Bali are HUGE! Perfect for those surfers. Last year I got a bad cut on my feet when we were hiking down hence stopped halfway and unable to go further. We did not manage to tick this place off. This year, we came back again and anaged t go all the way down to this truly exceptional beach. However, at this same place, again, I injured the same leg again (got another bad cut at the shin).

A visit to Nunggalan isn't for the faint hearted. The beach’s untouched natural beauty comes at a steep price. And by this, we mean a long steep trek down the cliff edge via a winding dirt path. Do take note there isn't any toilets or shower facilities hence do come prepared. The path to the beach is largely unpaved, with a mix of dirt track and uneven stone steps that wind their way down the cliff. Nunggalan is the most challenging beach to reach in Uluwatu, so we’d only recommend it for those with a moderate fitness and mobility level.

Waves are extremely huge here and this is one of the best spots in Bali for seasoned surfers. We came here in June 2024

Got my shin cut at the edge of the boat when I am trying to get down from it. Hence do practice extra precaution to avoid the mishap that I faced. Do take note that some parts of the shipwreck is rusty as well.

How can you not be in awe with such view?? Nunggalan has one of the cleanest and bluest water in Bali since not many people come here.

The iconic shipwreck in Nunggalan Beach. Do take note to come in the afternoon when the tide is not high so that you can have access to this shipwreck at ease. Nevertheless, do check the tide timing as it varies from time to time as during the high tide, the pathways to the shipwreck will be covered by huge waves.

My injured leg , AGAIN at the same leg and at the same beach

Food and Drinks

Will not touch much on this since it will be based on one's preferences.

Getting there

DAY 10

For our trip around East Java, we opted for a driver to bring us around for 3 days according to our itinerary due to the bad road condition at some places, not forgetting the confusing roads as well to avoid getting lost and time wasted. Our routes will be as follows around East Java:

50K IDR for helmets/ 2 pax

=Estimated USD12/pax

(NOTE: We had surveyed many options and managed to finally find one with reasonable price tag. Plus, their service was extremely amazing and professional as well. Do contact him, Mr Faisal when you are in East Java as he can give you a really good price (Just mention my name 'Tivvyaa' to him will do). Apart from East Java, he provides tours and transportation services as well around Lombok and Bali too if you want, which are customisable too depending on your preferences. The price above are for transportation via private car and are broken down as follows (highlighted in yellow):

Day 4: Nawasena Guesthouse - Surabaya

Our itinerary for 4 days in East Java will be as follows;

Morning

Around 8am, we departed to East Java whereby we had to take a ferry from Gilimanuk Port, Bali to Ketapang Port, East Java. Details are as follows:

Car

Wooden Puri Guesthouse - Gilimanuk Port

Duration: Approximately 4 hours

Cost: 850K IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD28/ pax (Note: If you need a driver, you may contact our drivers number :Mr Denny - 628199983545 / Mr Albert- 6287749408264)

Ferry

Bali (Gilimanuk Port) - East Java (Ketapang Port)

Duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour

Cost: 12K IDR/ pax = Estimated USD1/ pax

Afternoon

Do plan your journey as early as possible because we somehow was caught in a bad traffic which result us to reach Gilimanuk Port around 2pm instead of 12pm which was a 2 HOURS DELAY. We arrived at Ketapang Port approximately 3.30pm which indirectly caused us to not be able to spend much time at our first location at East Java, the De Djawatan forest. We spent approximately an hour there.

Activities

Cost: Entrance- 35K IDR/ 2 pax = Estimated USD1/ pax

Parking- Motorcycle : IDR 3K

Car : IDR 5K

Bus: IDR 10K

Duration: Approximately 1 hour by car from Ketapang Port

Operation time: Open daily from 8am to 4.30pm

Lost in the heart of East Java, Djawatan Forest is a mystical realm where ancient trees stand tall, shrouded in a veil of mist. With its eerie beauty and otherworldly atmosphere, this enchanting forest is a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The forest is known to be around since the Dutch era which are around 150 years old and the giant Trembesi trees give this place a 'Lord Of The Rings' type of vibes.

Accommodation

Accommdations in East Java are really basic but decent hence do not expect much if you are on a backacker's budget unless if you want to splurge on luxury hence you may opt for the ones with exorbitant price tag. Just sharing here on our backpacker's budget accommodations during our stay in East Java. We had done some research and these 3 are decent for a comfortable sleep night in.

We had 2 accommodations in Bromo due to we are unable to find decent ones earlier on our way from Tumpak Sewu to Bromo hence opted the first one. However, despite offering breathtaking views of the pine trees, lush vegetations and misty air, we opted for the second accommodation at Nawasena Guest House because of its location which is a walking distance from the cafes, mart etc. Don't get me wrong, we love Gangga Guest House as well and if you prefer to be away from the crowd and noises, you may opt for the first accommodation stated. Both premises do not have ac and fan. Both have heater for you to have a nice, warm shower in the freezing weather.

(NOTE: Majority of the accommodations will not have an ac and fan. You don't need one because the weather is really cold most of the time and it will be freezing cold during the night. Hence, do come prepared)

Activities

DAY 11

Morning

Cost: 200K IDR/ 2 pax for 2 points - Panorama Tumpak Sewu and Coban Sewu = Estimated USD7/pax

Duration : 5 minutes from Indah Damai Cottages

Approximately 40 minutes hike to the base

Operation Time: Daily from 7am to 3pm

Adrenaline junkies will definitely love this spot! Tumpak Sewu is hands down no doubt , one of the most beautiful waterfalls that I had ever witnessed. The best time to visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is during the dry season from April to October when it has less rain and the sky is clear. You have two ways to view the waterfall. First, from the Panorama Tumpak Sewu viewpoint. Second, you need to hike all the way down the canyon where you will be greeted by lush greeneries and flight of stairs to have a base view of the waterfall. The second way was one of the most thrilling experience I would say and will definitely gives you a pump of adrenaline rush.

The best time to go here is in the early morning as there will be thick fogs that will create a mystical vibes around this place. Plus, as usual, to avoid the crowds as well. Next, getting down to the base of Tumpak Sewu requires one to use the trail right beside the viewpoint spot. It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk down to the canyon and another 5-10 minutes further to the waterfall. Do wear appropriate shoes with good grips as you will be passing through some slippery rocks , bridges, bamboo ladders and the waterfall's streams on your way down. It can be quite dangerous. There are incidents where people did slip and injured themselves hence please, be mindful on that. That was the only challenging part, to not slip. After that, you will be greeted by the majestic 120 metres tall Tumpak Sewu whereby there are approximately 30 streams that flows down to form the dreamy cascading curtains of the waterfall.

Do take note that regardless how hard you try to remain dry at the base area, you WILL eventually get wet. Just remember to bring a waterproof bag to keep your electronic devices safe and dry. If you have enough time, there is another waterfall nearby, just around the corner which is a 10 minutes walking distance too from Tumpak Sewu, called the Goa Tetes waterfall. There will be a signboard to show you the direction. Goa Tetes on the left and Tumpak Sewu on the right.

The lush green canyon which you will encounter if you decide to down to the base area. It looks like Jurassic Park!

You need to go through these streams on your way down the flight of stairs. There will be some parts whereby you need to walk through the slippery rocks hence DO get proper shoes with good grips as there were accidents happened before!

The view of the majestic Tumpak Sewu from the bottom. You will be soaking wet as you will be continuously getting splashed by the mists as Tumpak Sewu has high humidity. Hence, do bring your waterproof bag and electronic device protectors if you want to take pics since your lens will be wet most of the time.

Afternoon

At noon, we headed out to Probolinggo area to stay a night there before heading to our next location the next day, Mount Bromo.

Duration: Approximately 3 hours by car

Activities

DAY 12

Cost: Bromo National Entrance Fee - 220K IDR/ pax = Estimated USD15/ pax

(Note: Weekends and Public Holidays will be more expensive at 320K IDR/ pax)

Operation Time: 24 hours (Advisable to refrain from going in the dark for safety purpose)

The best time to visit Bromo is between April to October, during the dry season. There are specific dates that Mount Bromo is closed for religious purposes hence do check first before coming. To explore Bromo, you may walk around or the easiest, time saving and cheaper way to navigate around there is by bike.

Penanjakan Hill, a vantage point offers a panoramic view of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. As the first rays of dawn touched the horizon, a breathtaking spectacle unfolded before my eyes. The sky was ablaze with hues of orange, pink, and purple, casting a magical glow over the volcanic landscape. The sight of Mount Bromo, shrouded in mist, emerging from the darkness was simply awe-inspiring. To get this view you need to start moving early as the sun rises early in East Java around 5am.

After witnessing this unforgettable sunrise, we descended to the Sea of Sand, a vast expanse of volcanic ash. The stark beauty of this desolate landscape was mesmerizing. We got a dirtbike to navigate the sandy terrain and approached the crater of Mount Bromo. The sulfurous fumes and the rumbling sounds of the volcano created a truly otherworldly atmosphere

Mount Bromo is more than just a destination; it's an adventure, a spiritual experience, and a testament to the raw power of nature. If you're seeking a truly unforgettable journey, I highly recommend visiting this iconic volcano.

The horsemen of Bromo

You can see some of these unique sculptures on your way to the top of Bromo crater

You've to climb 250 steps via a flight of stairs which will take approximately 30 minutes to reach to the top of the crater. At the edge of Mount Bromo, an active volcano in East Java, stands a 700-year-old Ganesha idol, placed by the ancestors of the Tengger Massif tribe. Believed to guard the local community from eruptions, this sacred statue is a powerful symbol of protection and spiritual connection amidst nature's raw power.

Who would have thought that a real-life Teletubbies land existed? Nestled within the vast expanse of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, the Savanna offers a surreal, almost otherworldly landscape. The rolling hills, covered in lush green grass, are reminiscent of the iconic Teletubbies hills. As you traverse this ethereal terrain, you'll feel as though you've stepped into a children's television show. The vast expanse of the savanna, punctuated by volcanic peaks, offers breathtaking panoramic views.

The best time to visit the Savanna is during the dry season, when the grass is a vibrant green and the sky is clear. The cool morning air and the warm afternoon sun make it an ideal time for exploring the area.

Scenic views from Sea Of Sands, Savanna and Teletubbbies Hills. We rode dirtbike to explore here and it was a sweaty, challenging ride across the vast volcanic ash desert.

Sis is frowning because of the heat

The weather in Probolinggo area is quite extreme as the humidity there is very low, in addition to the cold temperature. Hence, do bring some good heavy-duty moisturizers with you.

Food and Drinks

If you happen to be at Bromo Probolinggo area, do stop by at this small warung as the friendly, lovely lady there serves extremely delicious food. You can really feel that she has a passion for food as it is prepared and served from her heart. Price is extremely reasonable too. This is our go to spot everytime we are in Probolinggo to have a hearty meal at a reasonable price. We absolutely love the Lalapan dish and will highly recommend it! Basically it is a dish with white rice and sides of fried tempeh, fried chicken and the mouth- watering home-made sambal.

Practical Tips

  1. Do check when will be the Public Holidays because Bromo National Park price ticket will be more expensive during those dates and also in the weekends.

  2. Do try to bargain for the best price if you want to rent a bike as price in average starts from 150K IDR for normal bike and 250K IDR for dirtbike.

  3. Do bring moisturiser as the weather can be extremely dry.

  4. Bring suitable clothes to keep you warm as the temperature will drop below 15 Degree Celsius at night.

  5. Most of the accomodations here in Probolinggo and Malang are very basic but pretty decent unless if you want to splurge on the expensive ones for extreme confort. The ones in Probolinggo mostly do not have a fan/ AC since the weather is cool most of the times.

  6. Do bring sunglasses/ goggles to cover your eyes from the volcanic ash and sulphur in Bromo National Park.
